Elizabeth Barrett Browning (6 marzo 1806 - 29 giugno 1861)
But, she her personal life was full of loss, illness, depression, an overbearing father, and by the age 39 she only awaited death and heaven.
Portrait of Robert Browning by his friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1855. |
Then, unexpectedly, in 1845, the poet Robert Browning entered her life.
Secretly, and personally, Elizabeth wrote 44 sonnets (Sonnets from the Portuguese) to express her astonishment of the unexpected and growing love between Robert Browning and herself.
Segretamente, e personalmente, Elizabeth scrisse 44 sonetti (Sonnets from the Portugusese)
This is part of the first sonnet, it expresses her complete surprise and wonder at the love that was entering her life:
"The sweet, sad years, the melancholy years,
Those of my own life, who by turns had flung
A shadow across me.
Straightway I was 'ware,
So weeping, how a mystic shape did move
Behind me, and drew me backward by by hair;
And a voice said in mastery, while I strove -
"Guess now who holds thee!" -
"Death" I said.
But there
The silver answer rang,
"Not Death, but Love."
Morte", dissi,
ma la risposta,
"non la Morte, ma l'Amore."
I rejoice WITH her and FOR her, I want to cry !!!!
Io gioisco CON lei e PER lei, ho voglia di piangere !!!

I never knew this story, she met him so late in life... after counting on my fingers, I figured out she was with him 16 years. At least she had a nice love at the end. She died young too... 55. (More counting on fingers.) Well, this was a great post, lovely story, and I also had tears in my eyes too. I'm glad she found her love...
ReplyDeleteHe looks pretty attractive to me, I would have gone for him too. :)
