She was 40 years old and he was only 34 !
Her father was a "tyrant" and would not give his permission for marriage,
so Elizabeth and Robert eloped
and then lived in Florence, Italy until her death in 1861.
Elizabeth Barrett e Robert Browing si sposa nel 1846.
Lei aveva 40 anni e lui aveva 34 anni !!
Suo padre era un "tiranno": e non darebbe il permesso per il matrimonio,
allora, Elizabeth e Robert fuggita, e poi vissuto a Firenze
fino alla sua morte nel 1861.
Elizabeth and "Pen", 1860. |
Hanno avuto un figlio quando Elizabeth aveva 43 anni !
But, Elizabeth is immortalized for writing maybe the most beautiful
love sonnet in the English language,
Sonnet 43, How Do I Love Thee .
"How do I live thee?
Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach...
I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life;
and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death. "
Ma, Elizabeth viene immortalata per la scrittura
forse la più bella amare sonetto in lingua inglese,
Sonnet 43, "Come Ti Amo."
Come ti amo?
Lascia che ti annoveri i modi.
Ti amo fino agli
estremi di profondita' ....
Ti amo con i respiro, i sorristi e le lacrime
Dell' intera mia vita...
E se Dio vuole
Ancor piu' t' amero'
Dopo la morte.
